Register Now for Beef Quality Assurance Training at 2016 Empire Farm Days

Seneca Falls, NY. The New York Beef Industry Council is once again partnering with Cornell University Beef Extension Specialist Dr. Mike Baker to offer Beef Quality Assurance Training at Empire Farm Days at 4 pm on Tuesday, August 9, at the showgrounds at Rodman Lott and Son Farms in Seneca Falls, NY.

The Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Program helps beef producers develop a consumeroriented production systems that combine technology, common sense, and animal wellbeing practices. The 3-hour educational program at Empire Farm Days will include classroom and chute-side training with live animals on how to properly administer injections to assure animal health and beef quality.

To receive BQA certification, participants will need to demonstrate their ability to give a subcutaneous injection. The 4-7 pm training will conclude with beef sandwiches for participants in the Beef BBQ Tent at the 300-acre showgrounds.

Beef producers interesting in registering for this BQA training should contact Carol Gillis at 315-339-6922, cgillis@nybeef.org.

Dick LeClar of Double LL Farm in Boonville, NY, participated in the BQA workshop at the 2015 Empire Farm Days. He has raised cattle since 1986. His 24-year-old niece who helps on the farm also took the training. LeClar says, “This training is very informative for anyone just starting in the beef business and for those of us in business for years. It equips you to better answer customer questions and produce a high quality beef product.”

LeClar also recommends the opportunity to attend Dr. Baker’s live cattle handling demonstrations daily at 11:30 am on August 9, 10 and 11 at the event that is the largest outdoor agricultural trade show in the Northeastern U.S.

“Mike Baker has done more for the beef industry in New York State than any one person over the past 20 years, and Empire Farm Days provides a perfect opportunity to learn from him to improve your beef business in a relaxed setting,” LeClar notes.

The Beef Center at Empire Farm Days includes live cattle breeds, the opportunity to talk with producers of the major beef breeds, and information on the BQA program and how Beef Checkoff Program dollars contributed by beef producers are used to increase demand for beef products through outreach to health professionals, food retailers and consumers.

Experience Empire is the theme of the 2016 Empire Farm Days. Show hours are 9 am-5 pm on Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday, August 10, and 9 am-4 pm on Thursday, August 11. Parking is $10 per vehicle. Learn more at www.empirefarmdays.com, 877- 697-7837.
